Hypnosis : How to Increase Your Creative Resources
How Hypnosis increases Your Mind–Body’s Creative Resources
One of the foundational ideas behind hypnotherapy is that, through the hypnotic process, you can easily cultivate the type of inner focus that amplifies the creative resources already existing within your mind and body.
What Is Hypnosis?
Hippolyte Bernheim, a pioneer of modern hypnotherapy, defined hypnosis in his 1888 classic De la suggestion et de ses applications à la thérapeutique (Suggestive Therapeutics: A Treatise on the Nature and Uses of Hypnotism) as:
“The production of a dynamic change in the nervous system of a person… by another person by means of the calling forth of representations or ideas.”
That long title and complex sentence really breaks down to something simpler. In essence, Bernheim is saying:
- In hypnosis, an “idea” (or suggestion) triggers a cascade of responses in the body.
- Likewise, when the body undergoes a physiological shift, it can spark new ideas or realizations in the mind.
This two-way communication between mind and body is at the heart of how hypnosis works. And the increase in your experience of this two-way communication directly increases your access to your innate creative resources.
How Trance Reveals Mind–Body Communication
When I enter a hypnotic trance, I often notice images, memories, or a inner “voice” emerging without any external effort. Alongside these mental impressions, I feel physical sensations—warmth, tingling, muscle release—and emotional shifts like smiles, tears, or laughter. It’s as if my mind and body begin a dialogue that normally remains buried beneath daily distractions.
- Mental cues (images, thoughts, inner speech) arise spontaneously.
- Bodily responses (sensations, subtle movements, emotional expressions) follow those cues.
By allowing myself to drop the usual mental chatter—worries, judgments, “to-do” lists—I open space to recognize this constant, creative flow of information between my mind and body. As the hypnotherapist holds a safe, supportive space, I shift from self-doubt or inner tension into a state of deep listening and trust. Eventually, this can lead to a sense of effortless flow which allows your creative resources to come forth.
Does a Hypnotic Trance Actually Create Those Dynamics?
It may be more accurate to say that a hypnotic trance on the one hand simply lets me notice the natural, ongoing dynamics of my mind and body—dynamics that were already there but hidden under everyday noise, and on the other, increases my cognitive flexibility to accept your natural creative resources guidance. When I’m fully supported to pay attention to these subtle, meaningful processes:
- A positive feedback loop begins.
- This loop amplifies the resonance of those mind-body signals.
- I become aware of their importance.
- I am able to trust my creative resources rather than ignore them.
In other words, by becoming quiet enough to listen, I allow the innate creative intelligence of my mind and body to surface. From there, this intelligence can help restore balance, clear blockages, and let go of what no longer serves me.
