What is online hypnotherapy?
Online hypnotherapy is hypnotherapy delivered by live video call. You join from a quiet, private space at home, and I guide you into hypnosis using only my voice, exactly as I would at my London practice. For most people and most issues, it works as well as meeting in person.
Hypnosis does not depend on being in the same room. It depends on your attention: on following a voice, turning inward and letting your inner world become more vivid than the room around you. A video call carries everything that matters, which is why online sessions follow the same structure as in-person work: a conversation first, then hypnosis, then time to reflect.
I am Michele Occelli, a registered hypnotherapist practising since 2010. I work regularly with clients in the US and other countries who see me only online, as well as clients in London who move between online and in-person sessions. Every client I have seen in both settings has found the work online just as intuitive, emotionally resonant and restorative.
What the research says about online hypnotherapy
Research on hypnotherapy delivered by video is younger than research on hypnosis itself, but it points in the same direction. In a 2019 University of Manchester study, published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, 20 patients with severe or moderate irritable bowel syndrome had hypnotherapy over Skype. Before treatment, 65% had severe symptoms. Afterwards, 25% did, and the results were only slightly below those of 1,000 patients treated face to face at the same clinic. 71% said they could not have had treatment at all without the online option.
A 2023 review in the same journal, by clinicians who have delivered hypnotherapy remotely for years, describes hypnosis by video as a major new mode of delivery, and one that appears to work better than hypnosis by telephone. Hypnosis itself has a broad evidence base: a 2023 review in Frontiers in Psychology brought together 49 meta-analyses covering 261 controlled trials and found positive effects across a wide range of mental and physical health issues.

Why clients choose online hypnotherapy
Online sessions are not a compromise. For many people they are the better option.
- 01
Relax in your own space
There is no journey before or after your session. You settle into hypnosis somewhere familiar, and afterwards you can stay with how you feel instead of heading back out into a busy day.
- 02
Wherever you live
Work with an experienced Ericksonian hypnotherapist from the US, Canada, Europe, the Middle East or Australia, or while you are travelling. The booking calendar shows times in your own time zone.
- 03
The same method and depth
Ericksonian hypnosis is conversational and guided by voice, so it translates naturally to video. Every session is built around you, never read from a script.
- 04
Continuity when life moves
Keep going with your sessions if you move, travel for work or cannot get to London, and switch between online and in-person sessions whenever it suits you.

How an online hypnotherapy session works
- 1
Book a time that suits you
Choose a 60-minute online appointment in the booking calendar, which shows available times in your own time zone. Once you have booked, you will receive a confirmation.
- 2
We start with a conversation
We talk about what brings you here, what you would like to change and what has or has not helped before. You do not need a perfectly defined goal: we can clarify it together.
- 3
Hypnosis, guided by my voice
You sit comfortably with the screen nearby while I guide you into a relaxed, focused state, like being absorbed in a piece of music or a good story. You stay aware and in control throughout.
- 4
Reflection and next steps
We finish by talking about what you noticed and agree a plan together. Some issues shift within a few sessions; others benefit from a longer process.
What you need for online hypnotherapy
No special equipment and no apps to learn. A few simple things help you get the most from each session.
- A laptop, tablet or phone with a camera, propped up so you do not need to hold it
- A stable internet connection, on Wi-Fi or a strong mobile signal
- Headphones or earphones, so my voice is clear and close
- A quiet, private room where you will not be disturbed for an hour
- A comfortable chair or sofa, and perhaps a blanket
- Zoom, FaceTime or WhatsApp, whichever you prefer
If the connection drops during hypnosis, nothing harmful happens: you simply come out of it in your own time, as you would from a daydream, and we reconnect.

Does online hypnotherapy really work?
Yes. For most people and most issues, online hypnotherapy works as well as sessions in person. Hypnosis relies on focused attention and on following the therapist’s voice, and both come through a video call. A 2019 University of Manchester study found that hypnotherapy delivered over Skype was only slightly less effective than face-to-face treatment for severe irritable bowel syndrome, and a 2023 review in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis describes video as a major new way of delivering hypnotherapy.
What matters most is the skill of the hypnotherapist, a quiet private space and your willingness to take part.
Is it possible to be hypnotised online?
Yes. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused, inward attention, similar to being absorbed in a book or a piece of music, and you do not need to be in the same room as the hypnotherapist to enter it. Most people go into hypnosis just as easily online, and some find it easier because they are relaxing somewhere familiar. Even people who usually find it hard to focus, meditate or switch off are often surprised by how accessible it feels.
You remain aware and in control throughout. You can hear everything, and you can open your eyes or stop at any time.
Who is the best online hypnotherapist?
The best online hypnotherapist for you is someone who is properly trained, registered with a professional body, experienced with your issue and easy for you to talk to. Hypnotherapy is not regulated by law in the UK, and regulation varies from country to country, so it is worth checking a few things before you book: formal training in clinical hypnotherapy, registration with a body such as the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR) and the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC), professional insurance, sessions tailored to you rather than read from a script, and independent reviews from real clients.
I am a registered hypnotherapist (GHR and GHSC) practising since 2010, trained in Ericksonian hypnotherapy with Dr Ernest L. Rossi and Dr Stephen Gilligan, both direct students of Milton H. Erickson, and rated 5.0 from 69 Google reviews. A first session is the best way to find out whether we are a good fit.
Can I have online hypnotherapy from the US or elsewhere outside the UK?
Yes. I work regularly with clients in the US and other countries who see me only online. Sessions are in English by Zoom, FaceTime or WhatsApp, the booking calendar shows available times in your own time zone, and fees are charged in pounds sterling, which your card provider converts automatically.
Hypnotherapy is a complementary approach. It does not replace medical or psychological care where you live.
What do I need for an online hypnotherapy session?
A laptop, tablet or phone with a camera, a stable internet connection, headphones, and a quiet, private room where you will not be disturbed for an hour. A laptop or tablet is ideal, but a phone works well too if you prop it up so you do not need to hold it. Sit or recline somewhere comfortable, and switch off notifications before we begin.
What happens if the connection drops during hypnosis?
Nothing harmful. Hypnosis is a natural state and you cannot get stuck in it. If the call drops, you simply come out of hypnosis in your own time, much as you would from a daydream, and we reconnect and carry on.
Is online hypnotherapy safe?
Yes, for most people. Therapeutic hypnosis is not sleep and it is not stage hypnosis: you stay aware, and hypnosis cannot make you do anything against your values. Hypnotherapy is a complementary approach and does not replace medical care, so please tell me about any diagnosed physical or mental health condition, or any medication, before we start. Some conditions, such as psychosis or severe dissociation, may need a different kind of support, and we can talk this through before you book.
If you are in crisis, please contact your local emergency services or a crisis line straight away. In the UK, call 999 or Samaritans on 116 123. In the US, call or text 988.
How much does online hypnotherapy cost?
An online session costs £150 for 60 minutes, the same as in person in London. Bundles bring the price down to £140 per session (3 sessions) or £130 per session (6 sessions). A limited number of reduced-rate sessions are available each month through my low-income clinic.
How many online hypnotherapy sessions will I need?
It depends on what you would like to change and how long the pattern has been in place. Some clients notice a clear shift within one to three sessions, particularly with specific issues such as sleep or a habit. Deeper or longer-standing challenges, like chronic anxiety or low self-esteem, usually benefit from a series of sessions. We will discuss a realistic plan in your first session.
Is online hypnotherapy confidential?
Yes. Everything we talk about is confidential, online or in person. You choose the platform you are most comfortable with, and joining from a private room where you will not be overheard helps you speak freely and relax fully.
Book your online hypnotherapy session
Wherever you are, you can start from home. Choose a time in your own time zone, and we will begin with a conversation about what you would like to change.
