Yes. Hypnotherapy can help reduce driving anxiety by calming the body's alarm response and changing the automatic reactions that motorways, traffic, bridges or a past accident have left behind.
Driving anxiety rarely responds to logic. You may know you are a capable driver and still feel your heart race at a slip road or a roundabout. Hypnosis works with that fast, automatic layer of the mind, and lets you rehearse driving calmly in imagination before you take those changes onto the road.
I am Michele Occelli, a London hypnotherapist with over 15 years of clinical experience. I work with experienced drivers who have lost their confidence, people who have avoided driving for years and learners whose nerves get in the way of their test. My aim is to help you drive where you need to, not just to feel calmer in the session.
Driving anxiety looks different for everyone. You might recognise some of these patterns:
You do not need to have had an accident to feel this way, and it is never too late to get your confidence back on the road.
Book a first session →In hypnosis, your attention becomes focused and absorbed, and the critical, analytical part of the mind steps back. In this state, the nervous system settles and the mind becomes more open to new responses. In our sessions, that allows us to work on four levels:
Hypnosis shifts the body out of "fight or flight" and into a state of rest. Experiencing that calm repeatedly helps your body stop treating the car as a threat, and makes it easier to return to calm on your own.
In hypnosis we take the journeys you avoid step by step in imagination, from the slip road to the outside lane, until they feel manageable. The brain rehearses a calmer response before you practise it for real.
If an accident, a near miss or a panic attack at the wheel set off the fear, we gently work with that memory so it loses its charge, without needing to relive it in detail.
You leave with practical self-hypnosis and breathing techniques you can use before and during a drive, and a plan for gradually returning to the roads you have been avoiding.
In person in London or online. Each session lasts 60 minutes.
About when driving became difficult, which situations feel hardest and where you would like to be able to drive again.
I guide you into a relaxed, focused state. You stay aware and in control, can hear everything and can stop at any time.
Many clients notice a difference after the first sessions. Anxiety linked to a single event often shifts within a few sessions; long-standing avoidance usually benefits from a series, often between 3 and 6, alongside gradual practice on the road.
Research specifically on hypnotherapy for driving anxiety is limited. The best-established approaches to driving fears involve gradual exposure, facing the situations you avoid one manageable step at a time, and hypnosis lends itself well to this because you can rehearse each step while deeply calm. More broadly, a 2019 meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, which pooled results from 15 controlled studies, found that hypnosis produced a substantial reduction in anxiety compared with control conditions. I will always be clear with you about what the evidence can and cannot tell us.

Yes, motorways are one of the most common reasons people come to me with driving anxiety. We work on the fear in hypnosis first, rehearsing the slip road, overtaking and long stretches without an exit, and then plan short, achievable motorway drives so your confidence builds in real conditions.
Often, yes. After an accident the mind can link driving with danger, even once your body has healed. Hypnosis helps that memory settle so it stops triggering the alarm, and then helps you rebuild confidence gradually. If you are experiencing flashbacks, nightmares or distress well beyond driving, please speak to your GP as well, as specialist trauma support may be helpful alongside our sessions.
It depends on how long the anxiety has been there and how much driving you have been avoiding. Fear linked to a recent event may shift within a few sessions. If you have avoided driving for years, a series of sessions over several weeks, alongside gradual practice on the road, usually works best. We will review your progress together as we go.
A 60-minute session costs £150, whether in person in London or online. If you would like to commit to a series of sessions, bundles bring the price down to £140 per session (3 sessions) or £130 per session (6 sessions). A limited number of reduced-rate sessions are available each month through my low-income clinic.
Yes. Test nerves are a form of performance anxiety, and hypnosis can help you stay calm and focused so you drive as well on the day as you do in your lessons. It works best a few weeks before your test, so there is time to practise the techniques.
Yes. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention, and you are fully alert again at the end of the session. If you feel very relaxed, simply take a few minutes before you set off.
You do not need to be ready to get behind the wheel before you get in touch. If driving anxiety is limiting where you go and what you do, that is reason enough to start.
